Subject title: Icyhands Sketches

Hello guys,

First attempt on a forum, so hope I'm doing this right. I've been working freelance illustrator on and off over the last few years, but now really need to improve my core skills. Included some finished bits just to get going and will follow with some work in progress and practice pieces shortly. I know this isn't the critiques section but any comments are welcome.

Your work looks really great! The lighting and sense of story is what stood out to me the most, it gives a very illustrator-y feel and personality to each piece. The only comment I really have is that maybe you should try using more hard brushes for a stronger texture, but that's just my personal opinion. I can't wait to see more from you!

Welcome to the forums! You have some good looking stuff here. You have a great sense of proportion, light and colour. The rat and landscape painting are my favorites.
One thing I do notice about in a couple of the pictures some objects don't feel grounded or contrast too heavily. The picture of the frog jumping on the dog for example. The dog doesn't have enough ground shadow making him feel like a cutout and pasted in. Makes him detached from the world in a way.
And the painted landscape with the mushrooms has a similar problem with the grass, I don't see any shadow making the grass jump out too much. My eye is conflicted between going straight to the awesome mushroom trees or the grass in the foreground.

I look forward to seeing more!

Thanks for that. The lack of a grounded feel you mention ShapeShifter, I think comes from me being taught to have all the elements of a digital painting on separate layers as, thanks to my bungling, you can still see those edges in the final image. I'm not finding that this method suits me at all and I'm trying to concentrate on just drawing and painting now, without getting distracted by all the options available in pshop etc.

Here's another one. Now, there's a great deal wrong with this image, but the idea has been stuck in my head for a long time and I had to get rid of it. You can see below that I went through a few variations. In the end I just set myself a really tight deadline and said whatever it looks like when the time's up, that's what it will have to be. And learn from there.

Great hands, Icyhands.

Thanks for the generous comments, it's very encouraging. (I hate drawing hands.)

The improvement here is unreal. I absolutely love your stuff, specifically the figures and those hands! Great work!

Thank you Sanguine. Though I have to admit the improvement feels minimal to me.

I sure hope this isn't Chris's sandwich.

Thank you guys.

Ernie I have to ask, is that <3 a heart or a ballsack? 'Cos my entire self esteem hangs on the answer.

Anyway, this took about 4 hours. WIPs below.
