Oi vey. I finally got off my ass and did something. Thought it was about time I start pushing myself and to stop being afraid of drawing things I never have, what a stupid fear. This was my first time drawing noses and mouths, came out better than I thought, I had no idea what to expect. Mouth's definitely need some work though. All the noses are from reference.

Finally finished this. I know it isn't perfect, but whatever. Teeth caused a lot of trouble.

What I've been up to. Vase from life. still-life, and more nose stuff. That still-life made me realize how slow I work, nearly 10 hours.

Love seeing all the practice. Keep at it, really good likeness going on.

Been trying to get back into the swing of things. I was badly sick for a week and couldn't do much of anything during that time. Here's what I've done, just all school assignments pretty much done in my smaller sketchbook. I'm also back to my desktop so I'll probably be posting animation exercises here from time to time. I have about 5 hours of experience with a tablet haha, so I'm still trying to just get used to it.

Haven't posted in a while. I'll spare you the reading and just say that I've been stuck in a hole for a bit, feel like I'm just starting to get over it, hopefully.

Here we go ladies and gents. I'm starting the 657th schedule I've imposed on myself to ACTUALLY follow this time. 4 hours total. Hour one is gesture. Hour two is exercises from Scott Robertson. Hour three is head/skull stuff. Hour four is animating/misc.. This time I have a physical card in front of me with 49 days on it. Each day I'll cross off each box after doing my work.

As for gesture, this is really only my second time doing them. I can't help but feel panicked and frustrated when I'm drawing under this time limit, I did 2 minutes for all of them but couldn't "finish" any. There are only a few I think turned out OK, the rest are just awful. But they'll only get better by doing more so...

Edit: Noticed my pictures kind of suck, I'll crop them and what not next time around.

Felt like my gestures were a lot better today, I still think I rely too much on contours. Need to develop a good system. Used charcoal this time around.

I can't tell from what you wrote, but is it a bad thing? I know I tend to be very analytical but I'm trying to break it off a bit.

Loomis head construction just doesn't make sense to me. Feel like I need to try a different approach. I had a brick animation to upload as well but Krita updated or something and killed the file.

Just trying to figure stuff out. Feels like I only get a couple of gestures I'm happy with out of each session at the moment.

Yesterday was awful for drawing. The way im doing gestures is not working, I've had 2 minutes for all of them so far and I haven't been able to finish even one. Random page of doodles to try and decompress.

Yeah, I hear you on figure/gesture drawing being a struggle. It's really painful when you feel like there's something you're not "getting." Looking at your drawings, I think you're not quite capturing the gesture as efficiently as you can; they look very "contour-y." Try simplifying the torso and limbs into just a few lines. I'm sure you've heard of Proko before, but this video of his in particular helps me a lot when I feel like I get stuck in an overly-detailing mode: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-ktfwayByRU&t=387s

Something else that helped me a lot was supplementing my quick gestures with longer poses - something like 20-30 minutes. The length of these poses gives you a lot of time to sit down and really analyze the forms in the body. They'll also help you scratch that itch of wanting to draw in the details, since it seems like you're doing it a bit too early in your quicker gestures.

And keep up the great workflow! There's nothing that helps us get better at drawing quite like, well, drawing.

Yeah I agree that I'm focusing way too much on the contours. Those 20-30 minute poses sound intimidating, but maybe I'll try them out. I haven't drawn the last 2 days due to stupid fear again, I've been trying to work out what I can do about my gestures, but the thing I need to do is just do more and stop thinking so much. Hopefully I can salvage this workflow.

Trying something else, attempting to focus less on the contours but I still feel like it isn't working, everything feels so flat.
