Subject title: Amanda's Sketchbook of meh

Hello, everyone. I just kinda joined today. I've been looking online for a while for a forum like this so I'm excited to start posting! (and nervous. There are some seriously fantastic artists on this forum! Far better than I think I'll ever be!)

I've drawn off and on since I was a little kid, but only within the past 2 or 3 months have I suddenly gotten pretty serious about learning the real foundations of art. I've never taken an art class before so I don't really know what I'm doing. What little I know is self taught through video tutorials and stuff. Anyway, I just bought myself a sketchbook the day before yesterday and I drew this today to work on proportions and shadow. (that one guy's humungoid shoulder is bothering the crap out of me!)

Somehow I ended up with an instagram??? That's how all the cool kids share their art, right??

Thanks ^_^ No, I didn't use any reference for drawing these particular poses. I've been trying to get out of the habit of doing that (Although if I need to I'll do a doofy pose in the mirror for a quick check, especially for hands) But I find drawing men far more difficult than women. I'm still very much trying to understand proportions and anatomy, so any reference you can link me to would be awesome!!

Some more ladies. The one in the corner that actually has a face actually ended up looking very similar to what I look like. That was an accident XD

Thank you ^_^ Like I said above women are a lot easier for me to draw than men for some reason. This feedback has made me wanna break out my sketchbook right now! :D

Wow, this almost feels like immediate improvement. I like that last wave the best. This is a great exercise :D

Wow, I am learning a lot today! (I feel like I'm spamming my own sketch book XD) I never saw the level of asymmetry in the body until now. It's totally cool how the body naturally balances itself out like that! (nerding out)

Aaaand here's today's posty thingy yeah. I actually drew this last night, but I'm gunna be at work all day today so no time for drawing :(

Anyway, I have some sort of ridiculous obsession with Gurren Lagann and sometimes, I just have to draw it out XD So.... Viral, everybody! And just to say that I WAS studying something with this I was trying to draw a pose that's more dynamic. I don't know if I succeeded or not, but.... ya know, I tried.

A small study today. I like the top one, but the bottom one was a failed experiment XD

The proportions might be off, but I was really working on capturing motion with these. I did these from imagination, but maybe I should really start using reference, too. I just get kind of discouraged when what I draw doesn't really resemble the reference much :/

So I was recommended to try out Cltr+Paint and it is a really fantastic site. I decided to work on perceiving form as explained in this magnificent video http://ctrlpaint.com/videos/form-not-shape

Thing is.... I'm really freakin afraid of bugs. I tried, really I did. But finding reference pics was just too gross! (bleck) So I did the not grossest bugs I could think of, a ladybug and a firefly. I wanted to practiced some more so I tried the same principle on a mouse (mostly because I was getting freaked out by bugs) and I think it turned out really well! :3 Also TABLET WORK! woaaahhhh.

as my art teacher in high school used to say, "No Hairy Lines!" i finally understand what that means hehe... Try to get everything down in as little strokes as possible, it makes the work cleaner. Great exercise!

(this can be done by using your whole arm to draw instead of your wrists/hand. Try to create a good balance of the three)

(that's cute that you think bugs are gross; bugs r ur frend)

I need to find a better place to draw. I usually draw laying on my bed, and that actually gives me a very limited arm motion. I use mainly my wrist and sometimes I can muster movement from my elbow.... sometimes.

And if a bug wants to be my friend it can be my friend from outside. Not crawling across the floor in front of me, giving me a heart attack! 3:

try sitting with pillows on your back and head and arch your legs with the sketchbook; sycra does it in his traditional drawing methods vid i think at the ending. if you're using a tablet, get a good desk with lots of free room to rest your arm; be able to draw a half circle around your body with your arm; that's about twice as much space as you need

This is my first real attempt at timed gestures from reference photos. These are all 60 second gestures. Because I seriously need practice in capturing motion I've decided to dedicate this one sketch book to timed gestures. And I'm gunna FILL IT! HELL YEAH! Hopefully they get better because these just aren't very good at all XD

1 line of action
2 torso and hips as circles
3 head as circle
4 stick with S and C curves only, and straight lines

try that ;)

I'm really glad to hear the links i gave you were used, i had a somewhat negative experience with that in the past so it's nice that things turned out better this time.

Also, i know the whole bug thing is past history now but i think this might help you in any future similar situation: You shouldn't feel scared or uncomfortable in your study... If for whatever reason you bump up into a topic that bothers you, you should feel free to change the subject and topic into something less unpleasant (like what you did with the rat), as long as you get what is the essence/focus of that particular you should feel safe in doing so.
What is nature, but a miserable little pile of forms!?

I bought some berries and then colored them. I honestly don't like the end result, but at least they tasted good :3

Lawl, your mother walking in sounds super awkward. Idk i can't stand anyone seeing what i'm doing on the computer, even if i'm watching just someone talking on Youtube. You gotta have that minimize on quick draw, just heightened alertness... Naked Ninja...

Kind of started working on skulls, hoping that it can help me with a few things... I noticed having the framework really helps me with the nose. Also I hope it will give me an understanding of seeing form rather than looking at the shape of the head. Pfft, who knows if that's actually what I'm accomplishing

Sorry it's so small. I actually kinda like how this came out. It wasn't frustrating because I'm so used to making bold lines. I really like that style, but it has it's place. I'm trying to learn traditional as best as I can.

Also, apparently purple ribbons? They were going to be zippers. Why? I don't know.
