Subject title: Aerumn's Sketchbook

Hey there! I'm new to the forums
My name is Jocelyn, but please call me Aerumn!
I'm 15 years old and self taught.
I'm both a traditional and digital artist, though I actually just started drawing digitally.
I'd like to improve as much as possible, hopefully I will over time...

Any comments and critiques are welcome and immensely appreciated <3

Here is some of my work from 2015:
Spoiler: show

Here is some of my most recent work as of May 2016:

I was kind of picky with what I chose to show so far, but I plan to be more open about what I draw in order to get more in depth critiques if possible.
I really want to improve, I'm definitely not too happy with my current work - I want to get to a point where I'm satisfied (to some extent) with my art.
I would love to hear your thoughts!

A quick messy drawing of an idea - the hand is a bit messed up... besides that, it was fun scribbling!
Also, I didn't sketch this out before hand - just used a brush pen and that was it. I wish I had sketched it before though. I remember next time :?

I did a bunch of hand studies since hands are difficult and I suck at drawing hands.

Did a photo study, definitely learned a lot about this particular lighting and how it affects the colors - also realized that I need to be bolder with my lines and brushwork, going to try to apply what I learned in future paintings

I'm with ambi on this. Looks amazing.
Though a comment... No one truly is happy with their work... at least not indefinitely. That's where improvement gets you. Lol

Thanks~ That's very true, I think that being unhappy with my work helps drive me to work harder at improving XD

Felt like doing a portrait but didn't want to get distracted with color - needed to focus on getting more contrasting values and just be bolder in general

Not too proud of this one, already see things I should fix but I don't want to take too long on it. Ended up experimenting with different brushes, feeling a little more comfortable with it all.
In general, it's not all that interesting but it's good practice

Experimented a bit, the first two are quick ideas that I wanted to play around with.
the third is a cleaned up sketch that I might keep working on...

Did another painting of richard armitage, thorin oakenshield this time. Not sure if I'm getting any better?

Image

Some photo studies, mostly looked at the color and lighting. It's a bit of a mess, could use some cleaning up but I think I'll leave it for now.

Image

WIP - Continued with the sketch, just scribbled in colors and hoped it worked... I'm trying to figure out how to paint this and how to use texture as well?

Image

A quick colored sketch of sorts, the bottom part of the dress needs to be redrawn

Thank you very much! I will!

I tried to work on some things this week,

did a sketch, might or might not paint it later
Image

Did some fanart of a korean drama that I watched while drawing, it's unfinished and will probably stay that way tbh
Image

Tried to draw something that didn't have a human in it... was more experimental with this one. The surface of the water definitely needs rendering and the color of it is a bit off.
Image

I reeeaaaally don't like these sketches but I did get a painting that I'm actually okay with from it so *shrugs*

Been pretty busy lately so I haven't been able to do much, on the bright side: I'm halfway through the school year!

A quick half-assed study for school:
Image

A quick painting that I'll probably never finish:
Image

15 minute portraits... I think I've gotten better in terms of speed but I also started using a few more brushes.
Image
Image

A series of themed paintings I did, essentially for class but turned into more of a personal project later on
Image
Image
Image

Just experimenting with brushes on this one. Don't like the hair at all, plan on doing some studies with different hair types and such. I've never really used any kind of smudge brush until now just 'cause for some reason I thought it was not supposed to be used at all, but there'd definitely some uses for it.
Image

A study that I really enjoyed doing, had to stop myself cause I wanted to do more personal work

Your paintings epic level rock. But being from Middle Earth, that makes sense now that I think about it. Wish I lived there. :D

Lol thank you very much Wyntry!

Been pretty busy lately, so not a ton of paintings completed. Can't wait for summer to start ;~:

An Abbott Handerson Thayer Study, I pretty much completely messed up on the face but I think I did alright in general. I was concentrating mostly on the clothing, although I think I need more practice with painting cloth and folds.
Image

WIP painting of Lucille and Tomas Sharpe from Crimson peak - I ended up cropping out Thomas because of how repetitive his pose was compared to Lucille.
Also, I learned something... different materials, such as clothing and skin, have different textures so different brushes/textures should be used for each in order for it to read as different textures.
And I can't quite figure out how to paint the window behind her, there's something I'm doing wrong or perhaps not doing at all.
Image
Image

I really hate how this painting is turning out so I think I'll leave it like this for now. I did get more in depth with eyes though and learned a few things while painting this.

Thank you so much! I'm glad you think so~

Practicing a different lighting angle and trying to just experiment and finish something, mostly satisfied with it but the hair needs more rendering and the glowing orb thingy might need to be moved lower for the lighting to be correct.
Image

A quick sketch painting I did after doing the before one. Def needs more rendering but I lost momentum for it pretty quickly for some reason
