Subject title: Kam's sketchbook (NSFW)

You were complaining about being stuck a while ago but you definitely leveled up your rendering with that last illustration. The only thing I would suggest would be to apply those rendering skills to a character/environment piece. The sketch(with the frogs) you made is pretty good, and I'd like to see it rendered, my only critique so far is that her left leg doesn't seem like it's connected properly to the pelvis.

I kinda turned to the dark side and used layer modes to get the lighting on it, I don't mind having this as a skill and I can use this to get a better feel for colors for "manual" painting I guess.
I will try to do more complex stuff as I get more comfortable and yeah I agree, I had some trouble with it, if I'm gonna be honest I still struggled to get myself to properly construct and figure out the spacial positioning of things on that drawing so I didn't get it right, that's something I really have to try and fix by being more patient with my sketch phase. that drawing is a collab I'm doing with Tele so the rest of it is completely up to him.

I didn't specify which ones but half of the gestures are from imagination, I did the constructed ones from imagination. I'll try to keep this balance from now on.

holy shit dude, i just went through your whole sketchbook and i'm so inspired; the complexity of your mech work blows me away, that stuff always seems so obscure to me, and those figures too! they're literally insanely smooth and flowy... gesture is really damn hard for me, but seeing how inconceivably far you have come makes me want to practice more :D
hey man you like drawing wow crazy me too what are the odds wow small world wow

Thanks, glad I could inspire you :) gesture was really hard for me too, I don't think I'm great at it now but at least I understand it's importance, I didn't until a while ago.

wooooooooah really likes these portraits; the construction is super interesting to me, making the parts of the face into polygons and all...i'm way too lazy for that kind of stuff. these perspective notes are super intense.

Thanks, it's helpful to know how to break down faces or really anything into a planar version of it, I don't think it's necessary but it helps me a lot visualizing how light falls on the form when I'm working from imagination.
The perspective notes aren't really intense actually, it's all basic stuff. I think everyone needs to know this stuff but I also know a lot of people get away with knowing little perspective but still create good art, to me it's common sense to get good at perspective because it's one of your main tools for depicting depth on a flat surface.

In retrospect this wasn't really a great year for me. I'm still kinda directionless and haven't managed to "get myself out there" both due to lack of confidence and not creating enough art, which stems from the lack of confidence problem to some degree.
Here's hoping I'll figure it out next year.

hi kam, i like your constructioney stuf so much! that's a lot of pretty meticulous work; i think sometimes just the action of doing something difficult makes everything else seem easier in comparison. like seriously, those are super clear and precise studies. also the drapery is super observational; how long do you suggest spending on studies like these? i guess its different for everybody, but in your opinion.

Thanks, yeah that's kinda true but it's also not really good to always make it difficult. also not all are studies but some are drawn from imagination, I didn't really specify which ones though maybe it's not hard to guess, there's less from imagination overall but I try to not fall in the trap of just drawing from ref again as it makes your imagination and ability to draw from memory stagnate, this is something that took me way too long to actually understand.

Anyway how much I spend on the studies depends on what I want to get out of the them, I call it done when I feel like I got what I wanted out of it. If it's a rendering study I try to render the forms as much as I can until I feel like doing more will either make it worse or make too little of a difference to be worth continuing. if it's a construction study I decide on how I wanna go about it and when it looks like I managed to make it work and learned something I call it done, though there are some which I got frustrated with and just left as well so sometimes I can't figure it out I try again or leave it and move on.

I've been in a bit of an odd state with art and haven't been able to properly enjoy it or enjoy it at all on some days which makes me draw little or nothing on some days (other than a tiny 5 second scribble so I can say I still did something even if it's really nothing), The reason I'm mentioning this is because I think it's best not to get caught up in studies and technical stuff too much, balance it out with fun stuff. I can't say much else because I'm still struggling with it and haven't figured it out.
