Subject title: JacksonEliGray's Sketchbook

Hola, forum.
I'm Jackson.
I'm 19.
I'm from California.
I've been drawing semi-seriously for about half a year, but incredibly unseriously for about two years.
I don't want to be bad at art (or lazy) anymore, so I'm going all out.
Five hours a day, minimum. Bum bum bum.
I want to make some serious progress in the next couple months, so I'd really appreciate your input, even if it's completely heart-wrenching.

I'm currently working on my line quality, human anatomy, digital painting, and values.
The first two are coming along alright, but the last two have been going quite poorly, so if you guys have any advice I'd really appreciate it.
Really, please tear my work a part; that'd be awesome.

I'm going to post some of what I've been working on over the past three weeks.

Just some more sketches I liked from the past few weeks that are amidst pages of studies.
About to go to a coffee shop to get back at it again.

Welcome Jackson, nice start!
I like your shading.

Piece of advice, take your time to learn each thing. Don't rush trough concepts or you'll end up with such a mess in your head.

Keep it up, and keep posting! ;)

Hey thanks man. That's awesome to hear. :)

Thanks. :)
Honestly, my cell shading is an accident! I'm trying for softer shading, but I keep pushing some parts too far, and they end up not blending as well as I'd like them to.
I can't find that skull reference I was using though. :/

Thanks!
That makes sense, I'll tackle one thing at a time.
Will do. It feels cool to be a part of this. :D

and while we are at it, to get nice smooth transitians between two values, try to use a tortilion (or so) to blend stuff. or a tissue for bigger areas. just play around with things!

Stuff from yesterday.
Other than a slightly better understanding of skull structures, facial structures, and neck muscles, I don't feel like I learned enough.
Although that might just be my impatience.

This stuff took me like five hours altogether. I feel like that's incredibly inefficient.
Let me know what you guys think.

I would say that you got pretty good knowledge from it, and time spent on practice/study is never wasted, even if you learn only one thing, it´s better than nothing =)

Hey guys, had some difficulty last time I tried posting a few months ago and gave up on it, but I've been working harder than ever. Hopefully it shows. :D

Will be posting more soon.

Just adding on, this was a thirty-minute sketch I'm pulling from yesterday's work.

Geez, if you're this good now, and you're putting in 5 hours a day, son, you gon' be real good in the future.
Keep it up! Your sketches have a good quality to them. Your shading is really good, but I feel like your gestures are kind of stiff, and could use some work to loosen up the pose. Other than that, good work! Keep it up.
Hey, before you keep browsin', check my art out if you haven't already!

Sketch from yesterday.
Think I'll move into some digital stuff today. :D

Hey, thank you. I really appreciate that.
I agree. I'll make a note of it.

I was more focused on the anatomy of the figure on the left for this one. The proportions are a bit stylized, - I find myself liking huge hands lately - but as far as muscles go, I'd say this is as well as I can recreate the human figure from imagination as of right now. Really in need of some leg work.

I kind of want to render this one out; I'm also in need of some softened paint practice.

Helloooo, once again I haven't posted in a while, but here's some stuffff.

Y'know, I feel like I've been working like crazy, and I'm still making all the same mistakes.
I know you guys haven't seen my stuff all throughout this process, but let me just say that I've spent a lot of time doing certain things that others seem to pick up instantly.
Being able to draw from reference has never been my strong suit. I'm assuming I just need to keep going though, lol.

I feel comfortable in certain things. My traditional work is alright. I can draw cleanly in traditional, but (and I think this may have something to do with my tablet) I have never been able to produce clean line art digitally.

Alright, sorry for the rant; I just needed to get that off my chest.
I'd really appreciate any feedback anyone has to offer.

Thank you to anyone who sees this!

* These images are all pretty unfinished. Kind of just a smorgashboard of random stuff pulled from the last couple weeks.

Well, I've been grinding pretty hard these past few days, and I'm pretty strung out.

Trying to fill six 8.5 x 11 with relatively small sketches everyday, as well as a fully rendered (or semi-rendered) digital image.
Did a bit of head anatomy this week. I've always had difficulty with anatomy.
But I'm trying new things everyday, and I think it's had some fairly decent outcomes.

I'm really trying to work on my sense of value, and just overall rendering, so if you have any insight, please share! :)
