Subject title: Antares Valdemar's sketchbook

I attempted to copy a photograph of myself today. Mainly I wanted to get a feel for what colours make up the light and shadow areas. I didn't check my own colour selections against the original with a colour picker, though I probably should have. This time I just let my intuition pick the colours. Next time I may do the colour-picker check. Anyway, I guess this is a warm-up to get me back in the swing of things - it's been a while since I attempted a real painting haha :D

Took one of my old sketches, fixed up the anatomy and perspective a bit, and tried colouring it using blue as an underpaint layer. It does kind of look like a night scene. Maybe I left too much blue in, he looks a bit like a zombie. Well the white eyes don't help either. :)
Generally when practicing anatomy, I don't draw the dangly bits, in case anyone was wondering.

Haha, I don't draw the dangly bits either XD

And welcome to the forum! I love the first one, the reflective light is soooo nice omg
I agree with the second one, bit too much blue. Although you could experiment with rim lighting, and have orange on one side, blue on the other?

Thank you very much! I really enjoy the reflected light too, I'm going to practice observing it so I'll eventually be able to do it from imagination.
I'll try experimenting with lights in the sketch, thanks for the suggestion :)

Some little faces I drew at work yesterday. Tried to draw with a light source in mind, using the minimum amount of lines necessary to convey the subject matter (apart from the pencil side view).

Interesting! The shapes are really lovely and I can see where the light's coming from. Although I still think you can challenge yourself uwu

Most of these seem to be top down or three quarter lighting. Try reflective lighting, or light from below, or underwater lighting, as a challenge XD

Thanks! And yeah, totally true, it was my first attempt so I was scared to try a more difficult setup haha. Now that I'm getting a feel for the process I'll start challenging myself a bit more :)

If that was your first try then it's a very good first try XD From what I can tell though you were being quite restrained. Lighting can be very dramatic. Like for the top left one you could have had half the face drenched in shadow judging by the direction of the light. Don't be scared! I mean those were your first tries, what have you got to lose? XD

Maybe I should work in pencil for now. When I use pen I'm scared of putting too much shadow in and ending up with just a black blob XD

Pen is actually a very good way to practice, especially if you're aiming on speeding up your drawings XD But yeah, good luck with the studies, looking forward to seeing them owo

Here is today's offering; more three-quarter view with top lighting XD I did attempt one bottom-lit face though which I think worked out ok. I also kinda attempted some rim lighting with the far right one.
The pink ones I did with a highlighter, cause it was the only drawing tool available to me at the time :)

Thanks very much for the encouragement :)

I did a bit more of a fully rendered drawing today from imagination. I drew it on the back of a worksheet, which I regret now because there are lines showing through from the back. I don't know about everyone else but I find it really hard to start drawing on a totally blank pristine sheet of paper so I usually grab some scrap. Anyway, I drew this out with pencil and then blended it a bit using a stub which I made from another worksheet haha.

Decided to have a little free sketch session after work today.
Started off normal and then started to get a bit out of hand.
Just when things started getting "interesting" my energy faded and I decided to call it a night.
But I guess expect more of this type of stuff from now on. Probably a LOT weirder stuff to come...

Thank you very much! I am still just getting to grips with values, so I will be focusing on it for the time being probably :)

Omg 'A flat headed man with deep thoughts.' That's the best thing I've read all day XDDD

Looking good though the shading is nice and you're experimenting with different angles and variations on faces. Haha, the big nose guy is really cool XD
