Subject title: Tuna's Cookbook ahem I mean Sketchbook

Hey, I'm Tuna/Doodle. I'm 17 years old and a Junior in high school. I draw mostly figures but I hope to improve and draw other things and maybe become a freelance illustrator/graphic designer in the future! It's a dream aha;;

So I'll just start off with a few of my sketches, hope I can get some critiques/opinions on these! :'o Honest critiques are welcome, I'm really looking to improve.

Image
A quick sketch that I did for my profile pic.

Image
Playing around with the free version of mischief.

Image
A sketch in the sketchbook.

Image
A self-portrait that I did for an art program adjudication.

Image
A painting of poinsettias that I did for art class.

Image
Image
A WIP. I was trying to do draw something with colored pencils for a change. First image is what I have so far (but with bad lighting, sorry). Second image has better lighting but the progress isn't as up-to-date.

Well that's it for now, I'll upload more later :D

Wow, thanks guys :'o I'm glad that guys enjoy my work. I still need to work on drawing inanimate objects so I might post my practice with those in the future.

I also need to work on my foundations in anatomy (since I started off trying to emulate the 'anime' style of drawing when I was young, which was a huge mistake, but I've been fighting to fix that aha).

To Gevoian: Cool! Might you be my long lost twin? :ooo

Aha thanks, I've kind of tailored my style to look cute most of the time. It just makes me feel a bit happier when I look at my art :)

A few more sketches. I really tried to emphasize the shading in the second pic (the head is a bit big but I don't want to change it after going through all that aha ;o; and the hands are all wonky fml).

Edit (later that night): Did one more sketch. I worked really hard on her hair aha

Thanks! Cute girls are fun to draw, I do wanna add more variety though, but it's hard going out of my comfort zone aha

I'm also trying to work on improving my digital art skills. I really suck at transferring my current skill to the computer and making it look similar do how I'd draw it traditionally. For any seasoned vets in digital art, how can I improve? :o

By the way, here's an example of my digital art. I haven't done a fully colored pic in a while, so this is like a year old aha;

In response to asking how to get better at digital art, it's just the same as using any other media, be it watercolour or coloured pencil or charcoal XD

It's just another way to express your art and thus it's only practice that will mostly improve your work. I would suggest you study up more on the fundamentals that comes with painting though, colour theory, value, light etc. These are all very important in portraying your work the way you want people to see it ^w^

Thank you, Neso. I'll definitely look into that. I already have some experience painting from art class and making a portfolio, but I haven't done full blown studies of the fundamentals, which I should do xD

It's just so hard, when you don't see your art as worthy, to see any future in it, you know? I'm always scared that I won't get anywhere in the end aha; I'll try to practice though.

And side note, I remember I was so scared of using charcoal because I had no idea what to use it for (laying down large areas of value, getting a full range of values) so I just used it like pencils until I did a full blown project with it. Now I love using charcoal lol

You're not alone, I feel like that absolutely constantly. Honestly there isn't a day that goes by that I don't feel as though my art is worth it. In fact, my worst fear is failure, that I won't become a concept artist to work in the industry creating and bringing to life characters and worlds, so you're not alone! Many artists feel like this, but it's this feeling that determine whether or not you'll become a successful artist. It's the make or break and if you overcome it you'll always get better.

And for the whole value thing, it's actually very easy once you get into it, and incredibly effective in a painting. Especially if you have the trick of lighting under your belt, because humans are more wired to see value than colour as the range is more limited. Practicing it isn't too hard either, but it's tempting to use pure blacks and pure whites, which I highly recommend NOT to use! XD

I used to really love charcoal but I've come to dislike it just for the sound it makes against paper hah. I would love to be able to use it properly but I have a long list of things I need to be better at before that XD

How come you tell peoples to add you on skype, and you simply delete their request :shock:

Oh that last piece is not bad, as for improving digital art I guess all I can say is practice practice practice; Check around the different type of shading style, and attempt to do one. The last one falls in the cell shading category if I'm not wrong. Check out http://ctrlpaint.com/ and https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PKMIwJt_joE

To Neso: Thanks, I'm glad that I'm not alone. And thanks for the advice, I'll definitely work on that. Everyone has their own worries, I really hope that we can all make our art the best that it can be :)

Edit: yeah I'm always afraid that I won't make it as a graphic designer or illustrator, but seeing your post reminded me to persevere and not give up :'o thanks (I'm probably saying thanks too much aha srry). And I am sure that you will become a great concept artist!

To Zearthus: I haven't even checked my Skype for requests in the past week, so idk how I could've deleted em :o huh, weird... I'll definitely go on and see if I have any so I can accept em! Sorry about that ;o;

And also, thanks! I'll definitely check out those links once I get off from work, I'm on break rn aha

Edit: okay I accepted the requests!

To butterscotts: Thank you! :)

I tried looking up some pictures that exhibited some dramatic lighting and tried to draw em to help with my understanding of light and shadow.

This one took like an hour or so.

Based off of this pic

I'm not used to drawing super realistically so it was a good exercise, I'll do some more when I get off work ^^

To do list (mostly for my reference):

-Study light and shadow
-Become more comfortable with drawing digitally
-Practice with foreshortening
-Start drawing landscapes
-Get better at drawing gestural figures
-Finally learn how to draw the bottoms of feet correctly?
-Don't give up!

Here are some more drawings that I did while trying to figure out how light casts shadows.

Now I realize just how much work I needed in this area lol

I'm supposed to be designing a book cover in graphic design, and this is one of the sketches that I made. It's supposed to be for a story about a boy and his monster friend.
