Subject title: Captain Kiryu's Sketchbook

I post a lot of different art in a bunch of different places so I suppose I'll just sort of put the highlights of everything here? These are all fairly recent, drawn within the past year (actually the first 2 or 3 might be like 2 years old). Though I really just doodle---finishing pictures is a pain and I sort of just prefer the look of sketches. I don't know if I should sort of introduce myself as well since this is my first post? I'm a 22 year old about to graduate college with my bachelor's that is unrelated to art. Drawing is something I've always done and I like to make friends with and talk to other artists. Other interests include burritos, cats, and making a fool of myself.

Hi CaptainKiryu, as a fellow fan of burritos I welcome you to the forums! :D Really cool physical sketchbook drawings, I especially love the composition of ink portraits with the tree in the middle. Really nice work!

I love the variations and expressions!! I definitely love the tree sketches and the thick outline sketches as well as the colour pencil sketches , it gives off a softer and more fluid look to them. keep it up yo! ^^

I thought I'd post an example of how I tend to do figure studies/catalog my references. These are what I've done from 2017-present (In order from oldest to newest). I sort of took up the technique of doing "crickets" from Sycra for figure drawing. It helps save paper and allows me to do more studies with what my attention span for working from reference can handle. I guess when I put them all together like this, I'm a little surprised with how many I did. I'd say it was worth it, because I've been happier with my proportions lately in my larger drawings.

I did a sketchbook full of designs in the summer of 2017 and these are my favourites of the bunch. I guess I'm hesitant to call them "character designs" because they weren't really designed with purpose within the context of a story. They're more like the sort of random ocs or mascots people might have on places like Deviantart.

Not sure if that's supposed to be a read, but I don't mind since I made those proportion choices on purpose and I find them pleasing for the time being. It's a style I tend towards when I am thinking about designing. I call them "leggy chibis" because they are not really my average proportion for characters, but they are too tall to be chibis.

I thought I ought to throw some of my digital drawings in this pile as well---even though I am clearly terrible at it. These are from October 2017--Present. Clearly there is a lot of messiness because I am a mess. Digital drawings sort of give me no where to hide and it is really hard for me to keep things in appealing shape and proportion, especially during clean-up. So I am obviously avoiding clean-up so that I don't have to face my own inadequacies for the time being.

I do enjoy the colour options that digital art gives you---because I like paying with colours that make my eyes hurt and the best way to achieve that is to look at those colours on a light-emitting screen. However, if I try to use more sensible colour schemes it shows the holes in my knowledge of how to harmonize things and pick colours that look right next to one another. Layers are fun as well.

I was thinking about posting just studies on here, but I don't really study enough to make that worth shit. So I'm gonna post general highlights of my art I like. I guess I'm open to critique, but I'm also very take-it-or-leave-it with critiques so don't take it personally if I don't think you're advice is advantageous to my overall direction and I ignore it.

This stuff is my fav pages from my 4 Oct 2017--27 Jan 2018 sketchbook.

Alright this batch is from my 27 Jan--14 May 2018 sketchbook. I had a lot of bouts of art block in this one which I combated with drawing prompts from tumblr, writing notes, and redoing old ass sketches from when i was like 15.

Hey all the peeps,

I'm still drawing loads---I just don't tend to post things here till I'm done with the sketchbook I'm posting from
And I've been doing a lot of things with decoration and finish that are more time consuming
but I throw some stuff on twitter @captain_kiryu before I do here

Keep drawing

I thought these were kinda funny. I recently got clip studio and wanted to play with it so I redid this drawing from last year. I have made a lot of different stylistic decisions with this character since then. And I tried to be more patient with the digital sketching process so that I didn't wreck the proportions this time.

Hi, mate :D
Woah, that last comparison there blows me right off my socks. How did you go about learning structure and composition in a single year? This is beautiful, if you keep on this pace you'll be a master in no time.

I salute you, Captain!
...you see, it's supposed to be fi_le like the file from the computer... the one where you put the data things in.

That is a pretty difficult question to answer....I think part of it is that I didn't really learn it all in one year---it just really wasn't showing in all of the work I was doing in the time frame of the older pic. But I was still gaining loads of mileage with my proportions and looking at things with form and trying to simplify them. At the time I was still incredibly shaky with digital drawing (still am) and was doing a lot of fast digital "illustrations". So the older image wasn't really given the proper simmering time for me to be able to see the drawing mistakes---in contrast, I did the newer one over the course of a few days and worked on other things at the same time.

Between these two images I made a conscious stylistic change with my characters. I really admire very simple, caricatured, cartoons and was trying to force myself into that sort of style for a few years. But I realized that I was sort of fighting an uphill battle making drawings that largely lacked appeal and other things representative of my insides. I guess it was just a case of sorting the things I admire from the things that suit me. So I decided to give a more structural look a go. I did some study (loose definition of study by more dedicated individuals, I imagine) of artists that I like whose work has more structure, but still maintains a strong silhouette and design.

Some Examples:
https://twitter.com/deerlordhunter
https://twitter.com/loishh
https://twitter.com/chootalks
https://twitter.com/PrinceCanary

And I sort of let myself draw in proportions and shapes that I didn't have to think about as hard and let myself go wild with things like colours. I also started drawing a lot of flowers which are pretty complicated forms, but they leave a lot of room for error. I guess for composition....I just felt it out? Usually by playing with the various coloured pens I have---adding different elements and finishes, like hatched shading and different flowers. Now I'm taking a wack at digital again with a new software and the things I've learned.

Sorry for the really long-winded response. I think in summary, I improved because I draw A LOT. I did a rough calculation that I have pretty much filled 9, 8X11" sketchbooks since 2015---110 sheets each, using both sides of the pages. In addition, I've done many random loose, leaf drawings, digital sketches, and a probably a couple hundred drawings in smaller sketchbooks. And that all adds up to some amount over 2000 pages of drawings. And that is just what I've done since 2015---I have been drawing nearly my whole life. To be honest, if i had more focus and work ethic I probably could have improved more. But I'm pretty selfish with art and tend to draw in accordance to whimsy and self-expression rather than discipline. I am flattered that you said I could reach mastery "in no time", but I don't really have the self-esteem to believe in that sort of achievement for myself.

I bow to your salute and I hope we are both able to find some semblance of what we are looking for in this "art" venture.

Hi, Kiryu,

I think that your sketchbook is a really good example and also a proof that drawing a lot is always a good way how to improve.
wish you a lot of inspiration and enjoy your drawing process :)
