Subject title: Tyler Burden's sketchbook (sometimes NSFW)

Hello everyone, I'm new here. I've been drawing on and off for a few years now, just recently starting again. Sycra's videos were pretty helpful in the beginning but I never knew there was a forum.

An example of my work as I was starting out, compared to now:

Gesture is probably my biggest weakness since I never studied it, so that'll be the main focus this year, along with facial expressions and perspective, hands, feet... everything really. Critique is welcome, especially with gesture.

With that out of the way, I'll just be dumping random doodles and stuff here. Occasionally there might be personal notes, which may or may not be helpful to anyone.

Welcome to the forum, dude! I'm surprised you think your gestures are weak, because from what I can tell so far, your figures have an awesome sense of movement and fluidity. Especially impressed with Zangief; I feel like adding gesture to hulking/muscular characters is a real challenge. Hope you stick around, and can't wait to see more! :)

Dude, what are you talking about? You've got great gesture and shape design. Those characters also look pretty neat, do you plan on turning it into a comic someday?

Welcome! You've got some nice art. The forms look especially nice to me (also that Etna!)

Hope you post more soon :D

Thanks for all the kind comments! Sorry for the late response, life's been throwing curveballs and I sort of forgot about this thread

That was mostly fan art but yes the dream is to do an action comic someday. I have a dozen or so OCs ready to go. Recently designed a few more below, though they were mostly done as a joke.

Mo butt.

On that topic I did look at a few butts recently (totally for study purposes) and noticed an easy to remember pattern that helped me.

From angles like this the far leg/buttock generally resembles a moon, which can stretch or compress depending on the pose.

There's also some referenced hands in there. Always gave me trouble but having an easier time after starting with a simpler "mitten" shape. Gesture and forms still need a lot of work though

Playing around with different eye types and seeing what effect it has

Misty thumbnail/WIP, and quick arm/leg study. Will need to dedicate more time to this

That's all for now..

I don't think your gesture is bad except maybe you draw the torso too straight sometimes.

Here's some stuff you could try implementing though(probably have to open it in a new tab):

Thanks, those are great notes, I should definitely incorporate more twisting.

Man, browsing through this thread really makes me want to draw more Pog
Big fan of the volumes and shape design! Oh, and the volumes ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)
Bound fast unto our fate
One path, one burden great
Yet ever do our aching souls point Heavensward
Ever rings out our song
